It relies on people choosing bad passwords.
I think the wanted term is "strategic brute force".

I am not sure the $129 price tag can be justified.

Now how long before a FLOSS ODF password retrieval tool is available?

My first thought was also that it was simply a brute force application
with some smart dictionary word lists. I've got it running (trial
version) against, what I consider to be a fairly strong password, and
so far it has taken 5 hours with another 2 to go. ... eg, Brute force
(I'm not optimistic that it will get the correct password either)...

On the opposite side of the coin I also tried out the Excel password
recovery tool from the same site. With the same password used to
protect an .xls file the software took about 30 seconds to get the
password - eg, Cracked protection.

There was a macro that was available which did pretty much the same
thing (apart from the fancy graphic's) from what I remember... I do
like the sensationalist over-hyped approach to the article "Russian
OOo password _cracker_...." tho ...;-)

Huh ?? Defender doesn't stop spyware (Webroot) ; firewall is only 50%
effective (Zdnet) ; UAC can be turned off and is annoying ; SP1 (incl
security reasons) due end of 2007...
