MS Office is deficient in that it cannot read or write ISO standard file formats. You'll have to ensure you save or email in the appropriate MS Office format, instead of the ODF format. Please note that just changing the file extension is not enough. You have to actually save or email in MS Office format. If most of your work has to be in MS Office format, you can make it the default for OpenOffice.
