Did you chose French as default language - or do you use styles and
templates that indicate French as the used language?
Tools > Options > Language settings > Language > Standard Language for
Docs > Western
If OOo has the dictionary installed for a certain language, a abcV
sign appears next to the name of the language in the list here, and
also in the list that appears here:
Format > Character > Font type > Language
As you can see here, language is linked to character in OpenOffice.org.
The best way to be sure your docs will be spelling checked, is to
specify the language in the template (or style) you use.
