You should tell what you saw in which browser on what platform. In general setting the correct MIME types should at least guarantee that the odt files are recognized correctly in Firefox. Whether the files are opened inside the browser or in an own windows depends on the plugin setting in "Tools-Options-Internet" inside OOo.
