Dave;
Thanks...I must admit, I didn't expect a reply, much less one written in a concise informative non computerese way. I will follow your directions and I am sure it will come right

I am running windows XP. I recently downloaded Openoffice. As far as i
can tell everything downloaded properly. My problem is i have no idea
how use it. When I click on an icon for example openofficeorg1 I get
hundreds of icons such as ddobjectsbar. I have tried other icons with
similar results. So to repeat my question...how do I start this.
Thanks

As you are not subscribed, you may not have seen:

After you download, you have to run the downloaded file. This should
install OpenOffice.

It sounds like you have downloaded the OOo (OpenOffice.org) installation
file to your Windows desktop. I think what you are seeing are the the
files contained within the self-extracting zip file you downloaded. If
you have not already installed OOo, try to locate a file (icon) named
"setup" or "setup.exe" and double click on it to start the installation.
After you install OOo you will find the links (shortcuts) to start the
program components (eg. Writer, Calc, etc) in your "Start -> All
Programs" menu When the installation has completed you will no longer
need those desktop files (icons) and they can be deleted (sent to the
"Recycle Bin").

I would suggest that you first open and read one of the "readme" files
that should be amongst the files (icons) on your desktop, or better
still read the information here:
http://download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html
and get the "Setup Guide" from here:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/setup_guide2/index.html

Hope this helps.
