    First of all, if you used   rpm -Uvih *.rpm, without any further 
modifications, you installed OOo in the /opt/ directory as you 
noticed. The executable you probably want 
is /opt/openoffice.org2.2/program/soffice. Entering this in a command 
line or browsing to it and clicking it should start OOo 2.2.
