Normally I do not want person's names hyphenated. I realize there are

Some say don't hyphenate anything that is capitalized, others say
hyphenate everything. What I used to do in Word was tell it not to
hyphenate anything capitalized, then insert manual hyphens if I wanted
to do so anyway. I can't find that functionality in OOo 2.2. Actually,
a better option would be to hyphenate everything but tell Writer not to
hyphenate specific words on a case by case basis. I can't find that
option either. I selected a name that Writer had hyphenated, but
couldn't find any way to turn off the hyphenation just for that word.
What is the secret?

I thought at first that you might mean hyphenation of double-barrelled surnames, but you mean the automatic hyphenation at the ends of lines - right?

Yes: you can do exactly what you need in Writer: you just have to add the exception to a user-defined dictionary. To do this:

o Go to Tools | Options... | Language Settings | Writing Aids.
o Select one of the entries in the "User-defined dictionaries" list (create a new one if necessary) and choose Edit. o In the Word box, type the name you want excluded from automatic hyphenation, followed immediately (no space) by an "=" sign (e.g. Featherstonehaugh=).
o Select New and then Close.

I trust this helps.
