I have recently downloaded and installed the "First Development Snapshot of OpenOffice.org Aqua", the native OpenOffice for Mac OS X. Obviously, it's a little premature to expect this version to implement a full set of features. (Is an early-alpha snapshot a real version?) However I can't find this option following the path: Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Online Update.
There is no selection "Online Update" at this location.
This is true in NeoOffice as well, but I surely don't expect you to answer for those developers. I am eager to get any updates for the program but want to automate the updates as much as possible. Any clues about this option beyond what may be radically premature expectations?

When updates for OpenOffice.org (2.2 and up) are available, you should see an update icon on the titlebar. This can be enabled and disabled in Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Online Update.

Just to make clear: only a version number is checked via the internet.
It has nothing to do with 'scanning the computer' of the users.
