Autosave is already in OO. You just have to enable it. You can
also enable back up copies.
Will autosave work if you haven't done an explicit save yet?
It does for me. I have autosave enabled for 5 minutes. Every five
minutes the save bar across the bottom is activated. I have had a
crash before saving the file, and it was recovered.
Just for clarification, beware that AutoSave works only for crash
recovery. It doesn't actually save the 'real' file. To do so, you've to
use the Save icon in toolbar or CTRL+S shortcut.

In addition, for better understanding in principle
(as far as I know it's actually developed,
but I couldn't find a new specification) ->
AutoRecovery of Files and Work Environment
