I was using an OpenOffice Calc spreadsheet to keep track of my work hours. I
had a loss of power. I think the document was open when the power loss
occurred. Save Recovery Information was enabled but Automatic Backups were
not. I rebooted the computer. Windows was showing a popup error message on the
task bar stating that there were corrupted files in the C:\System
Restore\[long number code].... folder. Before running chkdsk to fix the errors
I opened my spreadsheet to see if it was ok. I did not see any prompts to do a
recovery of the document. Everything looked good. I think I added that days
hours to it, saved it on the hard drive (should have tried saving it someplace
other than the hard drive) and closed the file. I rebooted the computer and
ran chkdsk at startup to correct the file system errors. About 10 files were
found to have errors but none had an ods extension. After the weekend I went
back to my spreadsheet file and OpenOffice did not recognize the file. When I
try to open the file OO.org asks what character set to use. If I accept the
default suggestions and click Ok I only get several lines of nonsense text
spread out over 16 pages. I clicked Start, Run, cmd, edit "file name.ods" and
I find this:

That isn't all of the text but you get the idea... it has nothing to do with
my time sheet. Is there any chance there's a left over temp file somewhere? I
searched for files dated for the day of the power loss but I only found a few
temp files dated before and after the day that the power loss occurred. None
of them appear to be related to OpenOffice. I tried PC Inspector File Recovery
to see if there might be a deleted temp file I could recover but found nothing
recoverable in the User\Local Settings\Temp folder. Apparently my deleted temp
files are overwritten very quickly. Any other ideas? I know- should've had a
backup. Or better, I should have asked myself: what is more likely, a computer
failure or a house fire? Perhaps I should stick to real paper.
