You'd have to see different factors when considering this question.

1. Size of the company
There are different degree of resources needed between company with 10
people, or 1000 people. It is easier and simpler to manage smaller
number, but then you will also need to consider, that smaller company
may have smaller pool of personnel available for the company to manage
such transition and operation using OpenOffice.org

2. Use
Business practices differs industry to industry. Some business practice
calls for sending Word documents around to conduct their business, and
some may get away by just sending PDF files when dealing with external
parties. Also, if you industry or company use macros extensively, and if
the company business infrastructure is depended on it, then risk and
cost of transition may not be worth, or be practical.

3. Overall technical expertise of employee & support
If the company has enough technical employees, then they can either
teach themselves learning new software, and possibly, help their
neighbors, but if not, either company will have to have someone for
"help desk" just to answer questions. Many of companies successfully
made their transition to OpenOffice.org had excellent internal support
systems, which included knowledge base, forum, and other documentations.
