I'm using OO2.2 on Win XP2.
How do I get a column in Calc to display feet and inches as per, for example 3'9" but still be able to do arithmetic on the value, treating this example as 3.75 feet? I don't mind if the inches symbol (") is not shown but the feet symbol (') must show. So far about the best I can do is to have the feet in one column, a quote in the second column and the inches in the third with no border between them and the columns made as narrow as possible. Please tell me there's a better way.

You need something like:
     =ROUNDDOWN(x)&"'"&MOD(x*12;12)&CHAR(34)
This concatenates the integral part, the feet symbol, twelve times the fractional part, and the inches symbol. You could tinker with this idea, for example by adding the ROUND function to the inches part if you wished.

If you need more control over the format of the separate parts, you could use the TEXT function, which allows you to specify the number format in the usual way. Then you could concatenate the results of, perhaps, two TEXT references and the required feet and inches symbols

I trust this helps.
