As regards the SUM function, one thing you might have wrong
(especially if you have recently used Excel) is the separator between
parameters of functions: in Excel this is a comma, but in Calc it is
a semi-colon. If you have Calc's syntax wrong, no function reference
with multiple parameters will work, of course.
