This seems very odd. Specifically, what are you doing when you say that you "try to create a pdf file from OpenOffice"?
I've exported from OpenOffice to pdf many times and have never encountered the problem that you describe, so I'm wondering if perhaps you're approaching it differently than I am.
Another question: If you print the file from OpenOffice, does it print OK, or do the pages also come out blank?
