Indeed. But as no-one else has mentioned a similar need, maybe I really 
am the only one who's needed this exact feature.

Serendipity rules again - I'd never heard of ooolilypond before: looks 
potentially very useful for me! Thanks!!!!  But I don't think the inter-
linear example is better than what I've done now, which is to use 
'anchor to char' and give the pictures a final positional tweak when 
all the text is done: possible because this particular document is 
quite short - probably impractical for a long one.
