There are hidden costs. For one, a VERY buggy office suite. I am using
it for a business now, piloting the software as my company is considereing
switching. I can 99.9% guarantee you that the cost you pay in time
dealing with bugs and design flaws is much more costly than just buying MS
Office.
If you care about your data, don't use OpenOffice.

I needed a laugh today. I cannot count on two hands the number of times
OpenOffice has saved someone's but that uses MS Office because Office
refused to open their very important document that just needs to be
finished today.
Or frustrations because that report they worked on for the weekend has
just automatically changed all the formatting and wont undo the changes.
Of the files between Mac's version of MS Office won't work with the
Windows version when trying to merge the documents.
All things that just work in OpenOffice.
I cannot remember the last bug issue I had with OpenOffice. I do have
two problems with OpenOffice which are pretty minor.
Of course there is no native version of MS Office for Linux.
