Might want to try this.

I have yet to fully try it.

I am using a Windows XP machine which has never had MS Office it.

I downloaded the Windows version of the Novell fix and tried to install it even though have the standard Windows edition of OpenOffice.org, not the Novell edition. OpenOffice complained about an invalid format a few times but I just clicked "IGNORE" and it kept on installing. I had nothing to test it on at the time so I just ignored it but I noted that .docx had been added to the file types supported by OpenOffice.org Writer.

About a week later I downloaded and installed the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats to update my Microsoft Office viewers which I use very rarely. But again I had no file to test the .docx format.

So, in light of this discussion, I searched out and finally found some .docx files on the web at http://www.xmlmind.com/foconverter/samples.html. I downloaded them. They appeared on my Desktop with Microsoft Word icons. But when I clicked on them they opened up in read-only mode in OpenOffice.org Writer.

I don't know exactly what is causing this and unfortunately don't have time to fool around at the moment to see exactly what has happened. But it seems that I can at the moment read .docx files into OpenOffice.org in read-only, which means I can save them in whatever format I wish, including .docx format, though I can't reopen those saved .docx formats.

Checking the properties of these files indicates they are assigned as openable by Microsoft Open XML Converter. That suggests to me that Open XML Converter is converting the *.docx file to *.doc format or something similar and then passing it on to OpenOffice.org Writer because I have OpenOffice.org currently assigned to .doc files and not to Miscrosoft Word Viewer. I don't think the Novell conversion is doing anything.

If I am correct, then at least on Windows systems, you can use Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack to convert for OpenOffice.org.
