Hi, Michael.

At install time, there is option box to make OOo the default application for MS apps; it is likely that you clicked these "on" when you installed. (The default is to leave MS files associated with MS apps.) To turn back to the MS apps, choose one of your files (.doc or xls or ppt) and right-click on it. Select the Open With menu pick which should list OOo and the appropriate MS app. Select the MS app, select the "always use this app" checkbox and continue.

Alternatively, (I don't have a MSWindows machine right here, so this is from memory) you can choose Folder -> Options -> Files which will list all the applications associated with the various extensions on your computer. Scroll down to the .doc or .xls or whatever and reselect the MS app for that file type.

Note that OOo can read _and_ write MSOffice documents, so you don't _need_ to switch back.

Hope this helps,
Donald.

I have been researching and writing a family history for approx 8 years using
Microsoft Word. I was sent a document a few days ago which I could not open,
and was told it was Open Office format and to download Open Office. I did not
want to do that as I would then have software I probably would not use. However
in the end I had to, to read the documents, but the result is that all my MSS
and other backup documents appear to have been taken over by Open Office. I can
envisage if I want to send a document written in Open Office or even a Word
document now by e-mail as an attachment, the receiver will not be able to open
it because it will be in Open Office format. To me this is disastrous!!

What can I do about this, apart from getting rid of Open Office on my PC. I
don't have the time to play about trying to fix things.

I would appreciate your urgent advice.
