Two things jump to mind here: Next time, just request that the sender of the document gives you a different file format. I do this whenever someone sends me a god-awful Office 2007 .docx. Also, it may be worth keeping OpenOffice around. Have you tried opening your Word documents with OpenOffice? They're quite compatible. OpenOffice can open and save .docs just fine. Just because you save something in OpenOffice doesn't mean it can only be opened by OO!
