[users] Getting rid of numbering

Hello
I am quite new to OpenOffice.   Suddenly, for no reason that I can see, 
numbering has appeared on all my documents.   Despite clicking the on/off 
button on the upper tool bar, it comes on again after about 1 line.   Please 
please tell me how to get rid of it as I am unable to do any of my work.   I 
have looked under format/bullets & numbering but there is no facilities for 
turning it off.
