Not sure if this is what you want to do - but I can group the text box
*and*
the rectangle by this :

Assume that the text box is entered first (this is not relevant....)
Enter Text into the box
Hit Escape to exit "edit" mode
Hit Escape to exit the text box itself (the "handles" vanish)
Draw the Rectangle
Single Click on rectangle to get the handles
Keep "Shift" pressed and click on the text (the whole area is highlighted
by
the handles)
Group the two

I am running OOo 2.2.1 on FC5, Kernel 2.6.20-1.2320

It's strange. About 75% of the time selecting the text box, holding down the
Shift key and then selecting the rectangle does *not* work; instead the
result is that only the last thing selected stays selected and the Group
command is not available. That's why I asked. After reading your reply I
persisted and eventually made it work but it's very unreliable.
