Some are deaming a soft unusable for minor glitch like this.
What I need is really a document preview integrated with the 'open file'
dialog box.
This is standard on M$ ... (I know it's one of the worts reason but it is.)

I can understand your frustration. The only document viewer currently available
in OpenOffice is in OpenOffice Base's document viewer. Perhaps someone is
working on this for the other OpenOffice applications. You may wish to send
your question to the OpenOffice developers —
http://website.openoffice.org/developer/
Quick View Plus v. 9 can preview OpenOffice documents, but after the free trial it costs $49 US.
Here's something I've found that may answer your need; however, I haven't tried it yet. I've downloaded (4MB) it today and will try it.

TextMaker Viewer
Open, view and print all common word processing formats. Free of charge.
Here you can download the free TextMaker Viewer from SoftMaker that lets you open, view, and print documents from Microsoft Word, TextMaker, OpenOffice.org, OpenDocument as well as other common office file formats.
