Hi Don
How do I remove the white, rectangular/square background surrounding an
existing logo or graphic?
The white square is part of the graphics file that contains your logo. You
can't fix that with OpenOffice.org, you need to fix that with the original
graphics tool.
You want to make the white section transparent. Be aware that some file
formats (in particular JPGs) can't store transparency information. You
need to save your file in a format like PNG.
I use the Gimp for jobs like this (it is freely available from
www.gimp.org). To make the white section transparent in the Gimp:
1. Select Layer / Transparency / Add Alpha Channel from the menu.
2. Select the white section. You can do that by using the Select by Colour
tool (the fifth tool on the main toolbar), and clicking the white section
with the mouse.
3. Delete the white section by pressing the Delete key on the keyboard.
The area should now appear as transparent, which is represented by light
and dark grey squares.
4. Save the icon as a PNG file.
I hope this helps. Please ask if you have further questions.
Adrian
