1) Though I'm no expert on the matter, my understanding is that password
protected documents are more secure than with MS Office.
2) OpenOffice has nothing to do with virus scanners, firewalls etc. 
However, you should never run a Windows system without them. 
Occasionally antivirus or firewall software may interfere with
downloading or installing OpenOffice.
3) You don't have to remove MS Office to install OpenOffice.  You can
have both on the same system, as I do on my work computer.  However,
when you install OpenOffice, you'll be asked if you want to make it the
default application for MS Office documents.  This is a personal choice
and can be changed later.  If you retain MS Office, you might be
interested in the Sun ODF plug-in, which will enable MS Office to work
with ODF files.  It's available here.
