Adrian:
It's the OS's job in which case Calc doesn't care, unlike Excel which
tries to do some of the work.
Harold:
But Calc apparently *does* care: "... Calc will not allow more than one
user
at a time to open the file." - your words. So, just like Excel, Calc is
doing some of the work; the work it's doing is actively to reduce the
functionality provided by the OS. IMHO that's *worse* than Excel.
Hi Harold. I don't see the point arguing about this. The file was locked
by the operating system because it is in use. That's a safeguard built
into the operating system to prevent two people editing the same file.
Calc is just passively obeying the operating system's rules. I suppose my
words "Calc will not allow" could have been more carefully worded. My
intention was to point out to the OP one difference between sharing Calc
files and Excel files, rather than explain why that was happening.
I think there might be a setting in a configuration somewhere to override
this safety feature of the operating system so two people can edit and
save the same file, but it's not advised, because the second save will
undo the first person's edits.
Rather than extending this feature of the operating system, Microsoft has
extended the feature in Office only so that no one else benefits. I think
this is typical of their strategy these days. They have done similar with
enhancing the clipboard.
Someone in the thread has mentioned there is an open issue asking for
similar functionality to be added to OpenOffice.org. Everyone who cares
about this functionality should vote.
I hope this post is clearer.
