Jimw, John Jason, my hubris got the better of me, as hubris tends to do, and in the process of trying to upgrade my kernel from 2.6.22-9 till 2.6.22-10, X-org failed, leaving me with nothing to do but re-install 64-bit Feisty. So now I'm running 2.6.20-16-lowlatency #2 SMP on my new box (AMD 64 X2 5000+) and ditto-generic #2 SMP on my ancient 32-bit machine, both of which have the current Ubuntu version of OOo, 2.2.0-1ubuntu 4, installed. As expected, the procedure for entering Unicode glyphs now functions perfectly well on both boxes. And although the Gutsy build is really nice, I've decided to take it easy until it's released in October before upgrading, even if I suspect, for temporal reasons, that it was not the upgrade to the 22-kernel itself, but some other download I did previously that was at the root of my problems. In any event I've learned two things from the incident : 1) check for loss of functionality after *every* update. I now type in «Ctrl+shift+u», «5000», and then «Space» into a text editor after every modification, just to make sure that I get «倀». If I don't, I'll remove the changes. 2) Something I wasn't aware of previously (the two of you may have observed it long ago) : it is not necessary to hit the «Space» bar after typing «Ctrl+Shift+u» and then the hexadecimal code ; «Enter» works equally well....
