Windows requires a file type extension on the file, such as .doc or .xls. Do your files have that? If not, when you use Save as, look in the lower left for the automatic file name extension, and make sure it's selected. If this is the problem, you can still open those files, by opening OpenOffice and then click on File > Open to chose that file or you can just rename them, to add the appropriate extension.
