Actually today I read that MS was defeated in the initial
bid to get their Open XML format as a/the ISO standard
but MS claimed that they were suscessful with their bid.
About 51% YES instead of 66.66% need
About 26% NO instead of less than 25% required
but MS states that they had a 74% favorable
their spin doctors worked overtime on that report
I believe the ISO.org report, not MS's press release.
MS believes, since they did not get the ONE and ONLY
ISO file format(s), then there should be mulitple ISO file
formats to do the same thing. That defeats the need of
"a" single International Standard for Cross Application
and Cross Platform functionality. Now MS wants, or are
they going to go so far as demands, to have their Open XML
format as the one that everyone will be using, over the
ISO standard ODF formats used in OpenOffice.org and
many other programs, and almost all Operating Systems.
Their idea of bigger is better might have inspired their legecy
ideas that their Open XML formats would be able to do
everything that all of their older formats could do
"exactly" the way the older formats saved and "displayed"
the file's information. That is why Open XML is over 6,000
pages of specification where ODF is about 600 pages.
sorry to go off topic, but I needed to vent some "rage"
over MS's defeat spun into a "world exceptance".

issue
You've just been touched by Micros**t's method of enforcing upgrades. The
latest formats are not backward compatible to anything else. If you can,
get your sender to save the spreadsheet in a more conventional format;
nothing will be lost, except by MS.

Hi,
A couple of days ago I received a spreadsheet done in Office 2007 and I'm
unable to open the file. I get a read-error, unknown or unsupported
Excel file format. Currently I'm running OO 2.1. Can the most current
version open Office 2007 files or is there a release just over the
horizon that fixes that issue?
Thanks,
Rob
