Unfortunately, your email contacts are victims of Microsoft's lock-in
and keep paying file format trap. From the tone of your email it appears
that you wish to return to that masochistic position. So be it, that is
your choice.

However, before you "leave" OOo (OpenOffice.org), you might be
interested to learn that the problem is your lack of knowledge, not the
default OpenDocument ISO/IEC 26300:2006 standard file format used by
OOo. Had you made the effort to check, you would have discovered that
OOo can save documents in many file formats, including MS Word, which
your unfortunate email contacts would have been able to open.

In answer to what appears to be the point of your question:

If you have saved your existing documents in OpenDocument (eg. .odt)
format, just open them in OOo, then use the "File -> Save As..." menu
option and select the required Microsoft file format from the "File
Type" drop-down list.

If it is just that your Microsoft file format documents are being
automatically opened by OOo, then you only need to change your Windows
file associations by following the instructions given here:
