OpenOffice.org is free to download at following URL.

doesn't the http://download.openoffice.org/ page itself autodetect
your platform and give the pictorial link to the correct and latest
stable release download. What if by the time, he really gets to
downloading the software, 2.3 stable has already come out? i think the
website's platform detection is accurate enough. :
What autodetect? At the link you gave I have to click
Download OpenOffice.org
Version: 2.2.1 (Stable)
Then I'm taken to another page where I have to select which operating
system I want to download. No autodetect here either.
On the link I gave when I click on
Download OpenOffice.org
Select your operating system, and off you go!
a list of operating systems drops down to select from. Still no
autodetect but does not require going to a new page like the link you
gave does.
Of course if you are using a Mac like I am, there are several more links
to click before you can download the program.
