Just to get in on this. Considering how many people write in with problems, but don't (apparently) know enough about e-mail to not put their whole post, several paragraphs worth, in the subject line, as well as various other things, putting the hurdle in their way of having to subscribe first might be just too much for them.

"OpenOffice? Yeah, I tried it, but when I had a problem, I found out that I had to subscribe to some news group to get help, and I couldn't figure out how to do that. Couldn't make the program work, so I gave it up."

About four (or maybe more) out of every ten tell about their problem, but nothing about their OS, or the version of OO they're using. I admire the people who see to it that messages sent to these unsubscribed people are CC'd to their addresses. They're doing at least some little bit to make OO usable for the average person.
