Is there a way to set the default character set or encoding in OOo Calc? I want to use Western Europe (ISO-8859-1), but every time I open a file in calc, it defaults to UTF-8. UTF-8 is OK except many of my symbols are not rendered correctly in UTF-8.

That makes no sense.

What version of OOo?

What operating system? What version?

What are you actually doing?
John,

Thanks for the reply. I am currently using OOo 2.3, but previuos versions have had the same problem. I run Kubuntu 7.04 and 6.06. I download shop inventory from a suplier. The download is in .csv format and includes 20 or so columns of product data. Some of the columns manufacturer name, product name and model and one or both of these symbols © ®. If I use UTF-8 I get a rectangular box instead of the symbol. If I use Western Europe (ISO-8859-1), I get the correct symbol. Once I've downloaded the I make a few changes, set pricing info, save the file in csv format and then import into a MySQL database. I've found the only way to preserve these symbols is to make sure I use Western Europe (ISO-8859-1) every time the data is saved. The font used doesn't seem to be part of the problem, as I've used a couple of diferrent fonts with the same problem.

OK, if it's merely a question of setting the /default/, then, no, I don't believe there's a way to do it. Perhaps you could create a macro.

I suppose these ginks who argue that way hold that because the rich man gets ice in the summer and the poor man gets it in the winter things are breaking even for both. Maybe so, but I'll swear I can't see it that way."
