I suspect you mean default application. When you right click on a Word document, what is the first application listed? If it's not OpenOffice or Writer, the file association has not been set. If it has been set, then there's some other problem, that requires further investigation. Changing file associations Right click on file icon Select Open With > Choose Program... Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and choose the desired application.
