How do you insert the reference? I assume that you use something like:

1. Insert | Cross reference

2. Chose the reference tab

3. Under type, choose Figure, Illustration, Table, or what ever sequence variable is used in the figure auto-caption. I always manually enter my captions because I do not want my figures in floating frames. I almost always embed my figures as a character on a paragraph with a specific paragraph style, but that is just me.

4. Select the one that you want

..... and so on...

I am putting together a test book with the following structure:

Chapter 1
        Figure 1.1
        "See Figure 1.1"
Chapter 2
        Figure 2.1
        Figure 2.2
        Figure 2.3
        "See Figure 2.1"
        "See Figure 2.2"
        "See Figure 2.3"

Chapters are subdocuments and all references work there. Figures are
generated with AutoCaption - "Figure chapter.#".

In the Master Document, I get:

Chapter 1
        Figure 1.1
        "See Figure 1.1"
Chapter 2
        Figure 2.1
        Figure 2.2
        Figure 2.3
        "See Figure 1.1" <-----wrong
        "See Figure 2.1" <-----wrong
        "See Figure 2.2" <-----wrong

What appears to be happening is that the Figure references are adjusted
in the Master document, but the cross-references are not. That is, the
first x-ref in Chapter 2 is to the first figure in C2. In the MD, it
still references the first figure, but in the MD this is in C1. All
subsequent references are adjusted accordingly.

It seems I should rename the Figure references to unique values in each
subdocument, but I can't find how to change them.

I was using 2.0 (dist. with suse 10.0) and upgraded to 2.3, but same issue.

Does anyone have any solution, workaround, etc.?

TIA, ds
