I can insert a x-ref just fine, but the auto generated Figure with caption in a subdocument do not work as desired in the master document. Ironically, they automatically reference across subdocuments which is something many people ask about how to do.
I think I am on to a workaround, at least. I tried deleting the autogenerated reference, inserting my own numbered reference, then inserted a x-ref nearby and where I actually wanted it to get the Figure numbers. This actually worked, but I didn't understand what I was doing - just trial and error.
