I am assuming you are using Windows. If not, ignore this completely and wait for someone else's response. Before installing the new version look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 and follow the instructions. You should then be able cleanly to remove the old 2.0 version. After that installing the new 2.3 version should be trouble free.
