  As OOo is released with RPMs (Ubuntu uses deb format, same as Debian), you
cannot install OOo directly but you need to convert the files to .deb format.

Where have you been, Dan? OOo V2.3 is released in a deb package as well as rpm - for which many grateful thanks to the packagers - and installs exactly as I described.
