The OP should follow the instructions I've provided in this thread with
the instructions pointing to

Those are specific for Ubuntu and are *known* to work properly. I know,
I've been installing OOo standard on Ubuntu since 6.06 was in beta.
Hagar de l'Est has done a  nice job of providing instructions that work
for Ubuntu, please don't confuse the OP with your Debian Etch install. :-)
