The OP should follow the instructions I've provided in this thread with the instructions pointing to http://www.8daysaweek.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=759 Those are specific for Ubuntu and are *known* to work properly. I know, I've been installing OOo standard on Ubuntu since 6.06 was in beta.
