You may remember my grumble a month ago that OOo.2.2.1 wouldn't read msWORKS
DB and SS files. Y'all recommended (below), and I have undertaken, to have
msWORKS write those files in .csv and .xls formats. At issue this time is
the size of the SS files.
In my typical case, the size of the msWORKS SS file is about 9kb. The
corresponding .xls file generated by msWORKS is about 16kb (factor ~2). I
then check the conversion by opening the file in OOo.2.2.1, which seems to
read it without problem. I then change text (not a calculation) in one of
the cells and have OOo.2.2.1 save the file. The result uses ~61kb (factor
~7, factor ~4 over the input file). The files that I have converted all
differ in detail, but the size ratios are consistent to an approximate
degree. I understand the standard industry assumption that disk space is
essentially free and easily wastable, but unnecessarily large files affect
both bandwidth and resources required for backups, archiving, and other
similar activities.
Am I doing something wrong? Can I do something better?
Otherwise, I am pleased to have encountered OpenOffice and intend to
recommend it to other people.
Thank you for your help, then and now.

========== Original reply on 26.Aug.2007
Many thanks for an exceedingly prompt response.
Write: I suspected as much.
Works spreadsheet: I'll try exporting to a .xls file
Works database: Exporting to .csv files will probably be necessary, followed
by reconstruction of the database.
Thanks again. No reply expected.

Just loaded OpenOffice.org 2.2.1. All aspects function, apparently.
Unfortunately, I have not found a way to import msWRITE files, of which I
have many. msWord will import them without problem. Have I missed
something?
OpenOffice.org provides an alternative to upgrading from msWORKS to
msOFFICE. Unfortunately, OOo 2.2.1 doesn't seem able to import msWORKS
spreadsheet or msWORKS database, the only two components that I use. Have
I missed something?
This apparent inability to convert my significant number of legacy files
makes OOo 2.2.1 of questionable utility. I hope there is a solution.

Regarding MS Write, I think you are going to have to open the files in
Word and save them as .doc files which OpenOffice can open.
Unfortunately not even Microsoft's own Word can read Works files. You need
to open them in Works and save them as .doc files. However, the following
may be of use: http://userful.com/support/ms-works
OpenOffice can't read these things because they are proprietary; many of
the details of the inner workings are not published and it is thus
impossible technically to support them. It's not lack of will.
