the 2.2.0 is old and i am sure things have improved a lot in 2.3 or so
the rave reviews and recommendations would lead someone to think.
openoffice is a whole suite of applications, now just the kernel
version does not tell us, just how much stress/load your system can
take and whether its already crunching more code in the background.
afaik, there are no menu-show-animation-delay setting that is exposed
in the UI and certainly nothing that makes your File menu wait for one
minute. i mean that is too long.

i would say that a good place to look is issuezilla of openoffice at
http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/project_issues.html#oooissues

do a search with specific keywords like delay in showing menu or
something...see if its resolved in newer versions...but it'd be easier
too if you followed-up with your system configurations.

p.s. don't mail me off-list. the list has a way of making volunteers
manually check for some header to verify you a non-subscriber and
specifically delivering the replies to inbox of
non-subscribers...something like acting as auxiliary human listserv's.
