Just download and install OpenOffice. When you install OpenOffice, there will be a screen where you're asked if you want to make it the default application for MS Office documents, make sure the boxes for all document types are checked. Also, if you send documents to others, you may wish to save in Word document format or export to PDF, if the recipient cannot open ODF documents.
