OpenOffice.org Writer is not a standard part of Vista. Someone
installed it on your computer before you got it. And they probably
associated all MS Office file formats with OOo (OpenOffice.org) when they
installed it. Then Vista associated all of these "not RTF" files with OOo
as well.
Suggestion: You probably have file extensions turned off. You need to
turn that back on. See your windows documentation for how to do this. Then
try to open one of the files ending in .doc in OpenOffice.org using this
filter: Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP. It should open it.
For files ending with .wps, you might want to download the Works
viewer program from Microsoft. You can open these files, and then save
them as .doc files.
After doing these two things, I would save all of these files as
OpenDocument files (File > Save As).
