have had some weird experiences with the docx and word formats from
Office 2007
1. Surprisingly, although OpenOffice 2.3 does not open the docx, the
latest NeoOffice 2.2.2 appears to be able to open them.
2. On the other hand, my experience has been that documents saved from
Windows Word 2007 in doc format can't be opened in either OpenOffice
2.3, NeoOffice, or, Word from the Mac version (office 2004) (I use a
mac). Fortunately, most people I deal with have refused to lay down $$$
and have stayed with the doc-generating versions of Word.
I have also just gotten a patch for opening docx:
(OfficeOpenXMLConverter020EN.dmg, available at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=349D942A-498B-4398-8CA3-E2212597B9C4&displaylang=en
which will allow word on the mac to deal with the Word 2007 docx.
Basically when I get a word doc from someone else, I *hope* I can open
it 8-(

what about the new Microsoft 07, I cannot open them.
That's correct. Microsoft has taken steps to change their proprietary
file
format so OpenOffice can not currently open files in the new "docx"
format.
You can save documents in the older "doc" format from Microsoft Word and
they
will work fine with OpenOffice.
