If I may interject - braces from a PC keyboard: {}

Thank you for your message. I shall send you a private one, partly in
French if you wish.
By braces I mean that in some texts, viz. scientific texts - chemistry
- you need some kind of "large parentheses" : you include a given
element between parentheses, then you include it together with
something else within square brackets - and you need a shortcut for
this on the Mac because there is no specific key for it - and then if
you want to include the whole, plus another element, to create a new
entity, you need "braces", which are a kind of undulating parentheses.
Now I do not know the shortcut for this, which is why I am asking.
Have a nice day.

Thank you for your message. Where do you write from ? Considering
your name, you might be a Franco-Canadian from upper Vermont or New
Hampshire, or Louisiana... However, I've solved half of my problem,
but I am still looking for the shortcut keys for opening and closing
braces. Also, I've never used "copy and paste" on my new Mac (bought
Monday). How do you proceed for "copy and paste" on a Mac ? Thank
you. Merci d'avance, et même si je peux écrire en anglais, je suis
toujours heureux d'échanger des messages en français.
I am not sure what you mean by "opening and closing braces" could
you elaborate on what these are? Perhaps they are just called
something different than what I'm familiar with. Are you able to use
them without a shortcut? If so, could you explain how you are doing
it without shortcuts? You can create your own or edit shortcut keys
by going to "Tools-Customize" and clicking the "Keyboard" tab.
You mentioned something in a previous email about special characters,
which can be accessed by clicking "Insert-Special Character" which
brings up the OpenOffice.org (Ooo) equivalent to Windows' character
mapper. When clicking on a character it shows what is supposed to be
a shortcut sequence, however I don't know how that is supposed to
work as it doesn't make sense to me. I don't know anything about
Macs, sorry. The windows shortcuts do seem to work in Ooo though,
for example to get é I press alt + 0233. I don't know if Mac has a
universal character mapper or if so if it's different.
On windows control+C achieves copy and control+V achieves paste.
I would assume that right-clicking and manually selecting "copy" and
then "paste" would work regardless, or using the menus "Edit-Copy"
and "Edit-Paste".
I am writing from Tennessee, I grew up in California. I took two
years of French in school, so I understand a little bit, enough to
often get the idea of part of what someone says. (I think you said
something to the effect of "thank you in advance" and perhaps
something about being able to write in English but being glad to
exchange messages in French.) My name comes from my husband who's
family has roots that are Canadian French. My father-in-law likes to
be called "Papier" by the kids since that's what he used to call his
Grandpa. My maiden name, Frandsen, I have heard but am not certain,
comes from a Danish background, but the red hair I got from my dad
implies some Irish may have snuck in somewhere along the line. My
family on my mom's side comes from Luxembourg.
I am happy to exchange messages and brush up on my French,
although since this is a public mailing list pertaining to OpenOffice
and how it is used it would be better to send a personal email or to
subscribe to the social email group, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
Also it has been made known to me that most subscribers prefer to
have everyone reply at the bottom of a certain conversation. I think
it just makes things easier on readers so everyone does the same
thing and it reads in chronological order for anyone jumping in on a
topic.
à tout à l'heure!
