Works is a product of MicroSoft. Your message was not addressed
to MicroSoft, nor to any affiliate of MicroSoft. This is the
Open Office users' group, which consists of volunteer support
for the Open Office Org's Open Office Suite, which is freely
available for the download, and is not in any way connected
with or produced by MicroSoft.

Your query needs to be directed to MicroSoft.

My query is, why would anyone actually seek out Works in the first
place?

* It is a "crippled" product - limited in ability - designed
to be given away with Windows, and does not have anywhere
near the capabilities of MS Office, let alone those of
  Open Office, a superior product

* Its file structure is unique enough, and apparently different
enough from MSWord and MSExcel, that few other formats are able
  to recognize it.

* It is a MicroSoft product - what more need be said?
