I would probably do like this, if I not only had MS Office 2003 installed, but also had the original installation CDs): 1. Uninstall MS Office. 2. Install OpenOffice.org. 3. Sell the MS Office original CDs to someone who is stupid enough to buy it.
Result: You still have an office suite, but also more money... And every upgrade/update is free, so you don't have to buy your office suite over and over and over and over again. The fact that you can use both, even at the same time, is so obvious and so many people already said that in this thread, so I found it unnecessary to mention again. The same goes for the discussion about setting default file type and so on.
