For those who have been having troubles starting OpenOffice on Leopard, it has previously been advised that the version of X11 there is problematic. Instructions for installing a new version are available here: http://www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin . Beware, the installation method requires typing in the Terminal. Those who get sweaty palms when faced with a blinking cursor might want to wait until an official software update addresses this. However, Apple doesn't seem too concerned, so you might be in for a long wait...

I'm now getting reports of the Xquartz 1.2a4 release still having problems. For the time being, Leopard users who aren't happy with the performance of OOo should try NeoOffice: http://www.neooffice.org/ neojava/en/index.php . Of note, it is somewhat behind OOo in development [It's on 2.2.2], but is advertised to work Jaguar. For those on dialup, it is useful to see that Neo is updated via patches rather than complete upgrades.
