The reason people ask for confirmation is so they can harvest your email
address.

Asking for a return receipt to the recipients of a mailing list is 
annoying IMO. I ignore all return receipt requests from public mailing 
lists. FYI, you can set your preferences at Edit->Account 
Settings->Return Receipts in Thunderbird.
