That depends on your needs.  For most people, OpenOffice is an excellent
package, similar to and compatible with Microsoft Office.  It's
available for free download from www.openoffice.org.  It supports the
ISO standard ODF format, which Microsoft refuses to do.  It can create
PDF files and also includes a drawing package, which Microsoft Office
does not.  On the other hand if you are a "power user", heavily
dependent on Word or Excel macros etc., then it may not be a suitable
substitute.  However, since it is a free download, why not simply give
it a try and see for yourself.
