[users] [moderated] Is Open Office compatible with and allow users to open Microsoft Word Docs?

Sir or Ma'am,

I am thinking of making a purchase of a computer as a gift for a family
memebr that includes your Open Office Software.  I was wondering before
I purchase however if one can open Word Docs and other word processor
docs with your program?
